Day 39: Filming in Ballycarry

Filming in BallycarryWell today has been a pretty exciting day, all things considered. A rash of casting news, both major and minor, which is covered in my previous post. But also we learned quite a few things about the filming today. We first discovered that they were filming on location today, due to this tweet from Northern Ireland artist Anarkitty. After some fine detective work from Jackie, Nymeria, and The Rabbit, we determined the location to be Redhall Estate in Ballycarry.

Shortly thereafter, super spy silverjaime trotted out to the location and was able to snap a few pics. She also was able to glean some info from the locals, namely that they were filming in a barn and that they would be returning tomorrow and Monday as well.

Now we are getting reports that the scene they filmed today was set in an inn and involved Ned bursting into the room, angry over something one of his kids had done. This coupled with the report yesterday that there would be Lannister guards in today’s scene leads us to speculate that they were filming …

Ilyn Payne cast

Wilko JohnsonIn GRRM’s absence, I thought it would be a good idea to reach out to HBO to see if any of the remaining roles have been cast. So far, only one. But it is a pretty good one. They were able to confirm for me that Wilko Johnson has been cast in the role of Ilyn Payne. Johnson is actually a musician and a member of the blues band Dr. Feelgood. As far as I can tell, this is his first acting job.

Winter Is Coming: Is this guy perfect or what? I guess the lack of acting experience didn’t hurt him here since Ilyn Payne doesn’t have too many lines. I’m sure one look at this guy’s face was practically enough to give him the role. He also seems quite tall. He is going to make a perfect executioner.

UPDATE: HBO also relayed to me that the role of Will, the young ranger from the prologue scene, will not be recast. The scheduling with Bronson Webb was worked out and he will be returning for the reshoots.

In other casting news, Steven Erikson, author of the popular Malazan Book of the Fallen series, has revealed at Tricon in the Czech Republic that he will have a cameo appearance in the first season as a horserider.

UPDATE: Via a tweet, it looks like porn actress Sahara Knite has been cast in a speaking role. No word about what role it may be, but based on her profession I’m going to guess she may be an “employee” of one of King’s Landings brothels.

[Thanks to @icefirecz for the Erikson info and The Rabbit for the Knite news!]

Day 38: Returning to the Paint Hall

Filed Under: On Set, Rumors, Speculation

It sounds like the production may have moved back inside for now as filming the Hand’s tournament has concluded and we haven’t heard of any more location filming this week. One report indicates that they will be filming inside the Paint Hall tomorrow and Friday. I’m not sure exactly what scene but the report indicated that there are lots of extras that will be there, serving as guards.

Another report from an extra says that he will be filming this Saturday and from the description of his costume, it sounds like he might be a wilding. Perhaps this will be the scene where we first meet Osha? We know filming of Winterfell scenes are set to begin soon and it sounds like Saturday may be the first.

Lastly, a brief report about the filming of the tournament has surfaced. You’ll have to click the link to read it as it contains some small spoilers. Also of note, I’ve heard that the tourney scenes were directed by Brian Kirk.

Dempsie interviewed in Liverpool Echo

One of the newest cast members, Joe Dempsie, was recently interviewed by the Liverpool Echo. In the interview he talks quite a bit about Game of Thrones, in addition to Skins and his ties to Liverpool. Here is an excerpt:

Joe, who still has family living in Crosby and south Liverpool, admitted to being nervous. He said: “The fans are rabid waiting for this and they know exactly how they want their characters to look. Gendry is described as being tall and muscled, with thick black hair. I am hoping I can live up to two of those because I am only 5ft 8in! I am not really a gym person, but this has certainly got me going more often.”

Joe … will also star with The Wire’s Aiden Gilen and 300’s Lena Heady. He said: “I hope to learn a lot from them, not only in acting terms but in how to act off camera. I am also looking forward to being part of something which is already so popular and so many people love.”

Also, The Liverpool Echo reporter, Gary Stewart, is a fan of the books and a WiC reader. He contacted me with some additional info that he wasn’t able to put into his article, but that might be of interest to Game of Thrones fans.

  • Joe seemed really nice but admitted he hadn’t read the books. He said he just started reading AGOT but said fantasy wasn’t really his thing (even though he’d been in Merlin).
  • Having said that he is looking forward to the series as HBO don’t make bad TV.
  • He said he originally went for the role of Jon Snow last year but didn’t get it and was asked back to try out for Gendry.
  • He said his audition for the role was the scene were he’s talking to Arya about getting rid of dead wood (Hot Pie I think?) and he described Gendry as ‘not sophisticated but also not stupid’.
  • He got his scripts in mid-August and he only has scripts were he has lines.
  • He’s due to start filming in mid September.
  • He also said he has previously met Lena Headey when he spent a month in LA last year and said she and her husband were really nice to him.

Winter Is Coming: A big thank you to Gary for providing us with the additional info! Some good stuff and another little piece of the filming puzzle. It’s also nice to see some of the new cast members getting some press. Dempsie sounds like he’s got a good idea of the character, despite not having read the books yet. I’d be interested to hear what he thinks of the book, if he finishes it, because I’ve known lots of people who aren’t necessarily into fantasy that still fall in love with the series.

Quick hits: Interviews, articles and an audition

Let’s take a quick trip ’round the web for some Game of Thrones news and notes, shall we?

To start with here is a short video interview with Alfie Allen over at ITN. Alfie talks briefly about his role on Thrones and reveals that he has to “do an accent” for the role. At first, I figured he was just referring to the RP affectation that all the noble characters are said to be adopting, however when the interviewer asked for more details Allen said he couldn’t talk about it. So maybe he is doing a slightly different accent than the rest of the nobles to indicate he is from the Iron Islands?

Second is this interview with Dothraki creator David J. Peterson over at the GeekDad blog on Wired.com. Peterson talks about many familiar topics, such as his inspiration for the language, his process of creation and how he was selected by HBO. He does however gives us a new Dothraki phrase and provides this tidbit about his involvement with the on-going filming:

As for the actors, they get a ton of material (including phonetic pronunciation guides and .mp3’s of me speaking all the lines), and are in good hands on set (I’ve been in communication with the dialogue coach there, Brendan Gunn, who’s done a lot of great work in the past). I’d love to be on set, but I haven’t found the time to jaunt on over to Belfast just yet… I’d love to see Malta, though.

Next up is an article over at Big Think that talks about the hype surrounding Game of Thrones and takes a look “inside the relationship between modern fan culture and entertainment marketing.” The article is a good read and contains some interesting analysis of not only the show’s potential but also the books themselves and the long wait for A Dance with Dragons.

Lastly, for those who may have missed it earlier in the week, Joseph Campo is back with part three of Get Joe on the Show. In this week’s episode, Joe tells us that his next video will be the audition itself and gives us a little taste of what’s to come. He also manages to work in a WiC mention!

Focus group members report!

A focus group marketing research for Game of Thrones conducted by Schlessinger Associates took place yesterday in NYC, and our reader The Winter Rose was one of the participants, together with her husband. They have a full report over at their blog, The Princess and the Warlock. The participants were divided into two groups of 9 females and 8 males, all screened beforehand to be real fans of the series. The main interview was conducted separately for the two groups, which were not shown any footage or concept art, but rather discussed their opinions of the series as a whole, the characters, their likes and dislikes. Specifically concerning the adaptation were questions about the necessary elements to retain, and what extra materials the participants wish to see included in the DVD’s or on HBO’s website. Here follow a few extracts of the most interesting bits:

  • Both groups mentioned that the detail in the world was a big factor in what makes the series stand out. Everyone seemed to agree that the wealth of history really helped make it a believable setting. The stylized POV chapters were another huge draw for everyone since they allow for multiple perspectives and the chance to get inside different characters minds. Other things mentioned in both groups were the witty dialogue and dynamic characters. As for characters, it appears that Tyrion was the favorite in both groups. Both groups spent a decent amount of time speaking about him, followed by Sansa, who divided the groups into Sansa fans and Sansa haters. For both Tyrion and Sansa, there was a lot of discussion generated on their motivations and what makes them so interesting to the readers.
  • After characters were discussed, our focus group leader asked us what kind of extra features we would like to see included in either the DVDs or extra feature section on HBO. Both groups mentioned features on fight choreography, costume design, character histories, family trees, character profiles and flashbacks (though the guys said that they would actually prefer to have the flashbacks in the actual show and not as extras). The guys also requested maps while the ladies mentioned detailed looks into the Wall and the various castles.
  • The ladies group was also asked for words of wisdom on things we felt must be present in the show or things that should not be present in the show in order to make the adaptation work. The ladies mentioned that the most important thing was for the overall tone and theme to remain the same as well as the characters personalities and motivations. All the ladies agreed that changing core parts of characters would really upset them. Additionally, the ladies also requested that the appearance of the characters be consistent with the descriptions in the book since families and bloodlines are an important factor in the series.

The Winter Rose let us know that Winter Is Coming was mentioned as everyone’s favorite source of information for the HBO series. Very nice to hear that, very nice indeed.

Hear Me Roar: We are glad to have this great report which gives us some idea as to what HBO’s marketing strategy may be for the show. Looking forward to see which suggestions about the extra features they are going to use. I can say the focus group seems to have been well chosen – they definitely represent my opinions about the series and the adaptation, and I dare say reflect the general consensus on these issues shared by the ASoIaF fandom.

Thanks again, The Winter Rose!

UPDATE: Our friends over at Westeros provide another report with some additional info.

Day 32: Tourney wrapped, Winterfell next

Well we’ve passed the one month mark of filming on the first season of Game of Thrones. This past week was occupied with filming of the Hand’s tournament. It sounds like they hit all the major points: Gregor vs. Loras, Gregor vs. his horse, Loras and Sansa, Gregor vs. Sandor, etc. It’s possible they may be filming something to do with the tourney today but it doesn’t include Loras or extras presumably.

Next week it sounds like they will transition to filming Winterfell scenes. Isaac Hempstead-Wright and Kristian Nairn have both tweeted about starting filming soon. Crew member Paul McAnearney tweeted yesterday about being “in Winterfell”, presumably doing prep work. (He also tweeted a photo that may or may not have been the same location.)

So that’s where we stand right now. Hopefully we will get some reports from Miltos Yerolemou (who tweeted about posting something soon) and Conan Stevens (who I suspect will post something to his blog upon his return to Thailand).
